With the increase in the maximum BAföG rate from € 934 per month to € 992 per month implemented for the winter semester 2024/25, the amount for the proof of financing that must be provided by international students to obtain a residence permit (Section 16b Residence Act) will also automatically increase as well (amount for one year will be € 11,904).
As soon as the law comes into force, which is expected to happen before September 2024, immigration authorities and diplomatic missions abroad will be able to use the new BAföG rate to calculate the amount needed to cover living expenses. As the foreigners authority no longer needs to be involved in most cases for visas to be issued, the German diplomatic missions abroad will carry out their own checks. The new amounts should also be used as a basis for the submission of declarations of commitment (Verpflichtungserklärungen) and the blocked accounts should also be closed to the amount of € 11,904 p.a. to be on the safe side.
