Energy-saving check for students

17. February 2025

For students in Hamburg, the Caritas Association Hamburg, together with the Ministry for the Environment and Energy, offers the Electricity Saving Check project for Hamburg households with low incomes (e.g. citizen's allowance, housing benefit, basic income support, BAföG, income below the seizure limit), providing free advice on the topics of ‘saving electricity and water’, ‘heating’ and, as a new module, ‘climate protection in everyday life’.

In addition to the resulting savings in electricity costs of up to € 100.00, households also receive a package of free instant energy-saving aids (including LED and energy-saving lights, switchable power strips, timers, energy-saving shower head) worth up to € 70.00, depending on their needs. The purchase of a new refrigerator is also subsidised by the German Environment and Energy Agency or the Federal Ministry for the Environment with up to € 400.00 under certain conditions. The total monetary benefit for the student can thus be up to €700.00 and the savings achieved are secured in the long term.
