Renovations and new buildings

With its new construction initiatives and renovation projects, Studierendenwerk Hamburg ensures that students will continue to find fair, modern housing with affordable rents in the city.

Living in our housing complexes is more than just living!

A wide range of common rooms and additional services are included: depending on the residence hall, there are, for example, fitness rooms, a library, a fully equipped bar, a gym, music rooms and bicycle repair shops. Our welcome tutors in the residence halls support international students and help them settle in Hamburg and in the residence halls, for example, by assisting with language problems and official matters and by always being a contact person in the residence halls. Community activities (sports, international contacts, parties, student self-administration) and further services on site (social management, mediation and support in conflicts) round off the offer.

New Buildings
New residences in Hamburg

  • Under construction - residential complex in Elbbrückenquartier (around 370 places, start of construction: 2023, occupancy planned for the end of 2026, investment volume: around EUR 70 million [including more than EUR 11 million in subsidies from the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and around EUR 7 million in KfW funds], part of the Housing Masterplan 2030)

  • Planned - new construction of the Emil-Wolff-Haus (approx. 100 places [around 30 additional places will be created as part of the new building], demolition of the existing building and start of new construction from 2025, completion planned for the end of 2026, investment volume: around EUR 15 million, supported with funds from Investitions- und Förderbank Hamburg (IFB), part of the Housing Masterplan 2030)

  • Completed - Helmut-Schmidt Studierendenhaus in HafenCity (128 places; start of construction: 2016, occupation: 2018, investment volume: €13 million. The project was publicly funded.).

  • Completed - Sophie-Schoop-Haus in Neuallermöhe with 266 places in two houses (construction start: end of 2015, occupation: 2017, investment volume: approx. 24 million €. The project was publicly funded.).

Renovations
Renovations of Existing Flats

In addition to the creation of new places, particular importance is attached to the renovation of the low-cost flats in the existing stock. 

  • In April 2024, work will begin on the energy-efficient refurbishment and modernization of House A and B of the Margaretha-Rothe-Haus residential complex. The project will also create 17 new residential units. House B will be completed and reoccupied in spring 2025, while House A is currently being refurbished. A total of around 8.8 million euros is being invested, supported by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg - Ministry of Science, Research and Equality with a grant of around 2.4 million euros.

  • The first building of the Rahlstedt residential complex will be ready for occupancy on September 1, 2021 as part of a comprehensive refurbishment. The second building will be renovated by February 2022. Studierendenwerk Hamburg is investing a total of around 4.4 million euros, publicly funded by the Hamburgische Investitions- und Förderbank (IFB). The core refurbishment of the Rahlstedt residential complex was completed on schedule at the end of March 2022. In total, Studierendenwerk Hamburg invested around 4.4 million euros, publicly funded by Hamburgische Investitions- und Förderbank (IFB Hamburg).

  • From 01.12.2020 to 31.05.2021, the Lokstedt residential complex was thoroughly refurbished. Since 01.06.2021, the complex can be occupied again.

  • The Grandweg residential complex was renovated, modernised and extended from November 2018 to October 2020 (publicly funded). 

  • The Europa and Georgi House was extensively renovated and modernised  from September 2019 to September 2020 (publicly funded).

  • The Harburg residential complex was renovated from April 2018 to April 2019. In 2017, a roof renovation was carried out (publicly funded).
  • The Rudolf-Laun-Haus residential complex was renovated, modernised and extended from April 2017 to December 2018  (publicly funded).

In 2015/2016, the approx. 300 rooms in the high-rise building of the Margaretha-Rothe-Haus housing complex were brought up to current standards in terms of energy, construction and building services, and in 2014 the Gustav-Radbruch-Haus with approx. 330 places was renovated for approx. 11 million euros.
